They are effectively the same in the way a PS1 and PS2 are the same. Both play games and both play PS1 games, but a PS1 can't play PS2 games. iPods and the generic MP3 player both play digital music and, in many cases, other media such as videos and photos. The difference is in the "type" of digital music they play. iPods are designed to play music in a format that was designed and used only by Apple and also play MP3 encoded files. All other MP3 players play music only in the MP3 format although some cna also play WMA and other formatted mucis.
Formats are little more than ways to "store" each and every tone our brains interpret as sound. Slight differences in what is stored result in different sounds, tones, etc. to our brain.
So far, only iPods can play music purchased on iTunes. An iPod can also play straight MP3 files and, through iTunes or another digital music player, can load your CD collection into one of the formats an iPod plays.
Many people prefer iPods largely due to the asthetic of their design. I have the original 4GB nano and I got it for that very reason.

There is no difference between and Ipod and an Mp3 player. Reason being an Ipod is and Mp3 player. The only reason people think of an Ipod as its on seperate species is because its so popular, but in reality it may be popular, but its not the best mp3 player there is as some people say. If you compare an Ipod Micro 4 Gb with a Creative Zen MicroPhoto 4 Gb you'll see that the Creative has more features for a way better price, and even better than the features It holds more songs than the ipods 4 gb. And Instead of having to run back to Apple for the Battery, accessories, and music. With Creative you can buy your accessories and music from where ever you want.
Hope That Helps !! :)

Nothing, they are one in the same. An MP3 player the generic term applied to a device that can play MP3 files. An iPod is a specific type of MP3 player designed by Apple, Inc.
I should add that newer generation iPods can have added features (depending on the model you buy) such as the ability to play MPEG movie files, show cover art for MP3s, etc.

An Ipod is a brand of MP3 player manufactured by Apple. MP3 is the file compression codec used to make the file size small enough to be easily saved to portable devices. A good analogy would be that a hamburger is a "brand" of sandwich, just like IPOD is a "brand" of MP3 player. IPODs also, depending on model, may play videos as well.

They have the same basic function, but there are some key differences.
There are pretty much two ways to get music onto your music player. One is to "rip" your own music -- play it into your personal computer, which converts the music to files your iPod or MP3 player can play.
The other way is to buy your music already converted. There are several places on the Internet which sell music already converted into formats for music players. The most popular site is Apple's iTunes Music Store. It has about 75% of the market for music that is ready to play on a music player.
You get the music onto your player by connecting it to your personal computer with a cable and using (free) software on your computer to tell it which songs you want put on your player. How many songs you can download depends on the capacity of your player. Some players can hold thousands of songs.
iPods are the only players which will play music from the iTunes Music Store. iPods (and the iTunes Music Store) work on both Macintoshes and Windows. If you rip your own music or buy from Rhapsody/Napster/other MP3 sellers, you can use an iPod or any other MP3 player.
There are some other differences in how easy the players are to use, how many accessories (carrying cases, etc.) are available, and so on. But the key will be whether you want to buy your music from iTunes. You probably should go to the iTunes Music Store and decide if the musicians you want to listen to (or the books you want to hear) are there. If not, there are other stores or you can take the time to rip your own music.

MP3's don't hold as many songs and have a different look. They don't have a screen that shows your playlists and stuff. Most MP3s hold to maybe 300 songs. Most iPod's hold up to 1,000 songs or more. The iPod shuffle only holds 250 but it can clip on to your shirt and stuff. iPods r a lot more expensive so many people choose crappy MP3s. I have an iPod video that can play music videos and movies and TV Shows while the Nano can't. iPod's are usually $200 up. They are pretty much the same thing. Just different companies
