Two of those are not American. I would say Mark Twain.

Washington Irving is usually considered to be the first American author of note. Of those on the list, Poe would have to be the answer. Haley is a late 20th century author. The other two were British, although Dickens did spent a lot of time in America.

Poe based on your list. Dickens and Austen were in England and Alex Haley was much later than Poe.
