What can politicians do (regardless of party) to gain the Peoples trust again?

In the spirit of these Yahoo presidential questions, I present this question. What can our canidates do now in their campaging stage and later in the White House, togain the trust of the People and wash away the taint the office has endured over the last 17 years?

In general, the population never trusts the elected officials. This is the history of politics in the US. Politicians make promises to get votes. When they get elected, they do what they think they should. We cannot always agree with them.

Make reasonable promises. Look back at them once in a while to fulfill most of them. Tackle emergencies actively (this wins lot of trust). Seek dissenting voices especially in decisons with major ramifications and appear to be respecting them. Must accomplish at least one very visible nationwide project/programme every year.

IMPEACH THE BA$TARD!

This would restore quite a lot of the Trust that the Congress has lost over the last twelve years!
