He was only in the musical spotlight for four years. Yet those years changed music forever. Do you think if he didnt die his music would keep evolving, and thierfore evolving the music of others? At the same pace? Slower? Or did he reach his peak of influence?

By the way he did not die from an overdose of narcotics! He took to many sleeping to get some rest between shows, fell asleep on his back, the sleeping pills made him sick, and he was in to deep of a sleep to roll over and he died of asphiciation

You know, this is something I've thought about a lot.. a lot of the greats that passed too soon.. or did they? Would Hendrix have been as valid in the 80's? I rather think not. Would Keith Moon ever not have been annoying? Doubt it.
Would Zeppelin ever have put out another quality album had Bohnam not passed.. maybe, maybe not. Very arguably, In Through the Out Door was not the Zeppelin of old..

I tend to think that these artists were at their peak at the time and would have difficulty attracting the same kind of attention today. Music evolves constantly and I'm not sure that these guys would be able to .. or even want to.... create valid music in today's musical world.

Old timers that have survived are those that do change. Take Bowie or the Stones.. both of them had 80s music that sounded like 80's music. They changed their styles to fit. For Bowie, it was natural.. he is a chameleon.. for the Stones.. well.. let's just say it wasn't my favorite period of their work.

I think that those who died at the zenith of their success will always be revered as music icons, not washed up has-beens.

Great question!

I think he would have sold out. All the greats have burnt out, it is indeed better to burn out then fade away.

Pantera - May have sold on their fans slightly by going their seperate ways, but were ultimately destroyed by the unfortunate shooting on Dimebag.

Hendrix - Changed music forever while in the lime light, died of an overdose during the peak of his career.

Morrison - Defined a generation with his free spirit and poetry only to die an untimely death right after the peak of his career.

Sublime - Bradley Nowell gave reggae and punk a new face then died of a heroine overdose shortly after. If he were making music it would probably sound like SugarRay.

Blind Melon - The simplicity and folk influences of his music were enjoyed by so many. His music was infact so simple, that he would definately of run out of musical options if he were alive today.

I wont mention Nirvana, because I think they had absolutely no talent (not that Blind Melon is Much better, but atleast Shannon Hoon wasnt a whiney baby.) and didnt deserve the spotlight that they had or the legacy that Kurts suicide earned them.

However there are a few that stayed true........... James Brown, Jerry Garcia.......

My answers are a little of topic, but hopefully I succeeded in supporting my intial answer.

Honestly, it was almost better for him to make a big bang, and be done within 3 years. If he were still alive, I would imagine him being like Eric Clapton of now-a-days. He's still making music, and still was a very influential character, but I don't think kids these days would appreciate him now.

I think his style would be the same but he would have experimented with different techniques like synthesizers, and other techno stuff. But wouldn't it sound great?
