A 1,000 watt generator will supply approximately 8 amps of current at 120 volts. This will only operate a couple of small items. This will not operate your furnace or refrigerator, but it will operate your TV and possible a couple of lamps.

I definately recommend a larger generator. We sell, service and install Guardian generators by Generac power systems. You may see and purchase our generator selection at:

The formula to determine the amperage is: watts/volts=amperage

1000 Watt Generator

It may be adequate to operate your furnace, depending on what type it is. My house uses hot water baseboard heaters, and the furnace with circulating pump operating required only 2.3A operating current and 6.5A peak startup current, well within the capacity of your 1kW generator. Use a clamp on current probe to determine the requirements of your furnace. Easiest way to find out for sure is to plug it in and see what happens. At worst it will trip the generator circuit breaker and not work.
You should have no problem watching television or even using a computer. 1kW will supply lots of lighting.
Refrigerator is a tossup. Mine requires only 2.5A operating current, but 21A peak startup current. The peak current would overload your generator.
If you are in the market for a generator, look at your load requirements and size it appropriately. If you have a well pump it will likely require 240VAC. If there are frequent outages a transfer panel would save time and make it very easy to restore power to your house.
I have a few other items operating current requirements listed on my generator web page. Plenty of other safety related items as well. Read through and click on the links.

1000w or 1 Kw will not run much. Most fan heaters are 2000 watts. Are you sure you have the rating correct ?
