LIBERAL. Most kids are horrified of what Republicans have done to them. I'm Class of 2004. My brother is Class of 2005 and serving in Iraq right now.

Liberal, which is a real shame. However, they are liberal for several reasons:
1) For some reason, everyone is becoming an idealist. Liberal (and even socialist) philosophy is appealing in that sense. I have many true communists who go to my high school. For example, they people that diplomacy will resolve all conflicts and war is never necessary. The people here are not pragmatic and have no idea about what they are talking...
2) They want "freedom" to do whatever they want. Liberals have less "rules" than conservatives do. Hey, who needs a structured society?
3) The liberal platform is starting to shift from power plays with morals to things like the environment. For some reason, this is a very important issue for the young generation.
4) Teachers who are liberal put those beliefs into the minds of the children.
5) A desire never to have to say you're sorry.
Obviously, I'm not liberal. However, I tried my best to state some of the real reasons.

In general:
College age kids are probably 95% liberal...
They have nothing to hang on to; they have nothing invested in the current system. If the entire system is changed, they lose nothing, but rather are helped by an evened playing field.
Once a person hits 30-40, when the conservative percentage starts to increase, they have a considerable amount of time and effort invested in working within the limits of the system. They have spent a decade or two diligently and sometimes begrudgingly dragging their butts out of bed to be productive within a lightly regulated free market economy. Even if proposed changes to the system don't effect their accumulated wealth, they tend to resist the changes because they embraced the system long ago and decided to work within its limits. They feel that since they have had some success, others can also achieve success with a reasonable amount of effort. (ie: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)

From what I see and have read the young of America are going to shape there oun America not be a part of this mess. They understand that FREEDOM means that people have different op ions and that listening to all of them helps produce an intelligent answer. They understand that people have the right to practice any religion they want, not be forced though laws to capitulate to anthers. They want there taxes low but don't want the country to go bankrupt. They want to help the indigent and poor but want people than can work to work but for a job that can pay the bills not just get you further in debt. They understand that the two party system is only tearing apart the country. They understand that big business is not supporting America and are the main reason there is so much trouble now. To a lot of us they seem uninterested in the politics of today but actually there discussed by it's ignorance and want nothing to do with it. College grads are turning down gifts from corporations so when they graduate they are not tied to any of them. Young people leaving the church because of the hate and lack of compassion. They seem to want to be part of a new and enlightened society that cares about its people has integrity and can tell the truth. I hope there day comes soon.

Fiscally speaking, younger people tend to be more liberal, and then shift to more conservative stances on some issues as they age. Obviously this is not always the case.
Therefore, my answer is both, depending on when you ask them.
Edit: People, please don't confuse Bush with a true Conservative.

Both or neither, one or the other. Like any other large group of people we will see representitives of every ilk. That's one of the things that makes America great. Diversity not only of religion, of race, national origin but of ideas and thought.

Ok, here's how it goes. They will become liberal either by being in college or not graduating and mooching off the government THEN/IF they get into the real world and get themselves a brain they will become Republican
Cheers and have a nice day!

Liberalism is so hip, and so cool.
Just like our Colleges, High Schools are producing many fine liberals.

They will become what they choose. Their upbringing has just as much influence, if not more than the outside world.
