a wireless usb adapter is a usb device which plugs in a usb port of a pc or laptop
to link things such as a bluetooth device or a wireless printer etc
a router is a modem which is always on and connected to the internet, which can connect up to 4 pcs in a private network or to the internet,
if its a wireless router the usb adapeter can link to it also
so therefore a pc or laptop can surf the net without any cables
you can have many wireless connetcion to this

Your best choice is a router as suggested (one with a print server), you can also use a switch, but a router is prefered.
Stay clear of modems & routers that connect via USB, there just to slow, plain & simple.
I also don't advise using wireless, only because of the security aspect, the majority of people have no clue how to secure them properly, if you do know how or are willing to learn then go for wireless.
Just remember enter the routers setup program & set a "password", you can access it via any browser just read the manual that should accompany the router.

the wireless adapter is what you put on your computer so you can pick up wireless is you don't have an interior adapter, and the router is what you connect to the internet modem so you can send out wireless signals.

the diffrentce is that the router is connected directly to the internet and is what feeds the wireless internet. the usb wireless adapter is what picks up the wireless internet connection and then feeds it to the computer.
