my memory stick for my hp pavillion seems to have burnt up. got the blue screen of death. i had an old compaq persario and pulled the sticks out of it. they are the same size but the notches in the center of the stick do not line up. will these work or will i need to go to the store and match up the notches exactly?

If the notches do not line up, then it is not the right memory. You would be unable to physically insert the memory, because the notch will not line up with the "bump" in the memory slot. Placing the notch in different places for different speed and types of memory is the easiest way to keep people from putting the wrong chip into a PC. They do that on purpose.

you need a new one, you can just put another ram in, you need to find out what type it is there a quiet a few difference. The notches not matching is a sure sign its not the same, you can damage both the motherboard and ram
