I could not BELIEVE this story when I read it:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070323/ap_on_he_me/colleges_contraceptives

Apparently Medicare is raising premiums on Birth control in colleges. The question I have to ask is:

WHY IS MEDICARE PAYING FOR BIRTH CONTROL?????

Has our society degraded so far that sex is now mandatory for all college students? "Let's see, I need my antibiotics, my Diabetes medicine, and...Oh Yeah! My birth control!!!"

Is this the worst possible sign of the times, or what?

--Of course, many Liberals are going to point out the fact that I am also pro-life. They are going to say "Well, you don't want them to get cheap birth control, and you don't want them to get abortions, so what are they supposed to do with their babies? You are FORCING them to be pregnant (I have heard this MANY times on this site)

Well, you could just NOT HAVE SEX.........

Better than grandparents or welfare paying for babies.

Let me remind you that there are other reasons to be on birth control besides for contraceptive use. I'm actually a prime example. If I didn't need it for another valid medical reason, I certainly wouldn't be on it because I'm not having sex. I use hormonal birth control because my menstrual cycle causes such dips in my hormones that one moment I'm fine. The next moment, I'm so weak I could pass out. Other women use birth control to minimize their acne.

But for those who are using it for contraceptive purposes, not all are women who sleep around. Many women, even in college are in committed relationships or married but are not ready to have children. What should they do in that case? It's much cheaper to Medicaid to cover the costs of birth control than it is to pay for pre-natal care to an unwanted child, or an abortion, or an abortion gone awry. There are other things to consider than trying to prevent young women in college from having sex. Try looking at the situation from a different perspective. You still may not agree, but you may have a better understanding of someone else's thoughts.

It's better than medicare paying for a pregnancy and birth! Look at it this way, they are paying for preventive care. They are going to have sex anyway, might as well be safe!

Well first.. Medicare shouldn't be paying for birth control as Medicare it's for old, retired people..

I think you mean Medicaid.. I personally agree with you that these people shouldn't be having sex at all but unfortunately, the Liberals have convinced them that it's okay to do that. They've also convinced them at that birth control is 100% effective and if it fails (or you just forget), get an abortion. I am not opposed to Medicaid paying for birth control... but I don't think they should EVER pay for abortions.

You've got to be age 65+ to be eligible for Medicare benefits. I can't see much need for birth control amongst this group.

I think the government views this simply from a financial perspective.

It is less expensive to pay for birth control, than to pay for unwanted pregnancies.

The government isn't concerned with society's ethics. That is up to the individual.

I'd rather pay for birth control than abortions.

Perhaps we should raise college tuition as well to cover the birth control, since the colleges are promoting such behavior.

You are wrongly assuming that the only people on medicare are single. What about the married couples who can't afford children?

Yak Ride is correct. Medicare is for old people, Medicaid is for younger people.

just not have sex is cool, but at least if it is paying for birth control we hopefully won't have to be paying welfare to those who don't get pregnant because Medicare paid for the birth control.

be cool...

It's Medicaid not Medicare. Women on birth control are not all liberal sluts.

You need to get your facts right. Medicare is for people over 65. (And, it pays for Viagra)
