Does anyone know of a support group for those caring for an elderly parent? I live in the Plano area.

Being a caregiver for an older parent is challenging--and rewarding, too. And there is help for you as a caregiver as close as the Area Agency on Aging serving your county.

Call toll free 1-800-677-1116 to find the contact information for the Area Agency serving Plano, Texas. Then, when you call your local Agency, ask to speak with the folks that work with the "Family Caregiver" program. Area Agency professionals work with seniors and their caregivers every day--they are "real people" who know how it is in your situation and they will either have the information you need--or will know where it can be found.

Also, these agencies sponsor an array of services to support family caregivers. Be sure to ask about what is available where you live.

Area Agencies on Aging as a national network are one of the "best kept secrets" for older Americans and their caregivers. These organizations don't have big budgets, though--they are funded from the Older Americans Act which has not had any significant increases in appropriatons from Congress iin several funding areas for about 25 years.

If you like the help you are provided from your Area Agency on Aging, let your local county elected officials know--and let your representatives in Congress know, too!
You may also want to consider making a contribution to support the work of your Area Agency on Aging so that they can help more of your older friends and neighbors and their caregivers.

Hope this helps! Best wishes to you and to your parent!
