They are either digitally or litohgraphically printed on a 335gsm (thich card) usually 8 Up on an A4 or 16 Up on an A3 and cut down.

Most home printers will not cope with such a thck card but professional printing equipment can.

Firstly if using a professional design company the business cards will usually be designed on an apple mac using standard industry software Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign (some companies still use quark xpess) On approval by the client the digital files will go through a reprographics process, be proof read and preflighted then sent to printers.

The printers will then usually lay out the artwork as many times as they can on an SRA3 or SRA2 or SRA1 sheet of thick card (usually 350gsm but can be more or less)
This will then (if being printed lithographically) be made in to printing plates and printed on a litho press depending on how many colours the cards are designed in usually a four colour press will be used (The four colours being cyan, magenta, yellow and black which when combined make up any other colour, rather like how you TV uses Red green and blue coloured dots to make up all other colours)
When the cards are printed they will be allowed to dry, then cut out and packed and then delivered to the customer.

Normally an agency will design them for you, you pick the design you like, tell them how many you want and what weight of paper, they send it over to the printers by email, disc or isdn then the printers print them and cut them out then they are delivered.
