To have a real pet you need a hunter. A warlock can have summons (can be called pets but normally wont be)

Everyone can have a combat "pet" but they dont really do anything or even much dmg. Engineers can make all types of them. Even though most of them dont do much dmg the blue dragon can do some and helps a little bit if you are in pvp (more so on athari basin if they are on flag and you get feard)

But the hunter pets do more dmg by far. All warlock pets can do vary.

Imp - dps(dmg per second) with fireball
Blood Pact - Adds to HP
Voidwalker - Takes dmg (mostly for pve)
Can be sacrificed for a dmg shield on you
FelHunter - Level 60 has max res to everything
Can take negative buffs off you and just buffs off of horde/mobs
Succ - Can charm all horde/alliance and humanoids (put to sleep for so long)
Can do decent dmg
(wont go in detail in inferal and such as you wont have often)

Only Warlocks and Hunters are aloud to have combat pets that stay with you forever. Druids can now summon 3 treants for 45 secs and the cooldown is 3 min, and Frost Mages can summon Ice Elementals as well. An race that can be these classes can have these things.
