Yes at one time people really did believe that the world was flat. I don`t suppose they gave much thought to what happened to the sea, but I assume they imagined the world to be like a toy-town, which was fixed to a base and had solid edging all around it. so that the sea and land and everything else just stayed where it was. I find it very curious that we have so little information about `how` people viewed the world at that time, or how they thought it stayed in place. Perhaps they didn`t think about it at all, but surely someone must have be curious?

The answerer Alli has a weak knowlege of history. Columbus was most certainly not the man who discovered that the earth wasn't flat. Vikings, Spaniards, Italians etc all knew about the curvature of the earth. In fact Columbus set sail on his voyage because he was relying that it wasn't flat.
Of course, since the year 1492 AD the Earth has flattened.
In the 1960's a gentleman called Michael Bentine proved that the world was square (cubic to be precise) but we nowadays realise that it is a flat disc carried by four elephants. This has been shown by a man called Terry Pratchett.
Seawater doesn't fall 'on the sides' it falls over the edge. On its way down it soaks the four elephants that hold up the world and ends up washing the great turtle that's carrying the elephants.

Amazing indeed, no one paid any attention to that problem ?!
Obviously everyone thought, world was endless, or expected some kind of solid grounds around all that watter, after all, people were inclined to see world mostly as a solid surface, it began somewhere in the middle east and it ended just over the Gibraltar strait, where they presumed the lost Atlantis lied once upon the time...

Just until the extra water from Noah's flood ran off. Then Santa Claus needed a North Pole and flat worlds don't have them, so Jesus and Hurcules bent the world into a circle. When they did that the sea serpents and the unicorns accidentally fell off.

(!)The world was never flat. It's an oblate spheroid. Therefore no seawater fell off the sides. Ever

What do you mean When?!
Thank God in his wisdom for creating Global warming! Do you know how many gallons of water we loose every day because of the flatness?
But help is on it's way, my congressman has initiated a feasability study to build a wall around the edges to fix the problem. Then Congress will petition God to relax on the heat a bit.
Of course, swimming lessons will be provided Free Of Charge!
