I assume that you got that off the internet. I believe the reason those ads include "free" before the word gift is that most people realize that no one on the internet would really give you free stuff. Hence the sentence "Click here for your gift" still make peopel skeptical about clicking on their ads.
On the other hand, when you put the word "free" in front of "gift," people assume that there's no obligation to clicking on their ads, subconsciously, they would think that clicking on that site is harmless... it's like a hot girl wearing a tubtop AND a miniskirt on a hot day, that's like double the mighty goodness for you. In this case, people would be more "convinced" that it's a good, harmless site where they might/might not get free stuff.
That's how I see it ^_^

In the expression "free gift," 'free' is only used for emphasis and/or for literary effect. Strictly speaking, it is a redundant expression beause all gifts are free. Anything given in exhange for something given does not qualify the thing given as a gift.

you are right there, if it's a gift it is & should be free, but if you are in advertising, every additional word counts & contributes it's weight to the product, irrespective of meaning.
