Hi that not easy answer...I would say that only farmed fish but no "wild" fish or close to none. Firstly the Japanese like fish and sea products more that any other food. They are also quite large population, and their own watters are not enpugh for feeding so much fish to an entire poulation. In fact the

Japanese have huge fleets of fishing boats all over the world often overfishing in places from the Mediterranean, to the whole Atlantic and Pacific, and smaller seas within. Also the dymamism of the society and mores implies that they have a lot of competition and are quite competitive at many levels yet I am sure there are also reasonable people and maybe you should just go for either local products, avoiding young fishes, size and maybe you can choose a fish not being overfished today but this is quite rare and if you find one maybe is because it is very ugly, tastes bad or some reason like being poisonous and that in Japan, where they have skillls to remove the poison of all their own posionous fish, does not secure they are noit being overfished. I love fish and all fish are overfished, it is a sad reality we have to face, and guilt will not help much, but if all did as you probably the situation would not be so bad. So the best way is either buy typically farmed fishes like salmon, rainbow trouts, some types of flounders, etc, all farmed fish, or ask any local about the fish and situation in that area.

Hope did not bum you out to much, but today if you want to eat fish safest bet is farmed or asking in the area you are going 2.

For thousands of years, fish has been a source of protein for Japanese as they did not eat much meat. Recently Japanese diet has been considered to be "healthy" and its dietary culture spread out all over the world, especially Europe and the US (rich countries). This means more and more people are eating sushi or sashimi (yes, fish!). And the new comer is Chinese. Their appetite is due to the population big indeed. This situation brought larger consumption of fish globally and the sustainability of fish became a worldwide issue.

Today there are few boats to catch fish outside Japanese territorial ocean. Great amount of fish is imported. And even greater amount of fish is farm bred. If you drop by any restaurant in Japan, the fish plate you eat is quite likely bred fish unless it is a very high end restaurant. Also I would like to note aquaculture technology in Japan is incredibly advancing. Soon or later almost all seafood we eat can be sea farm bred just like beef or pork we eat now.

Japanese loves seafood therefore they know how important it is not to lose but sustain it. So, don't worry and enjoy your food in Japan.

you do no longer could. it is purely that eating fish is a factor of the subculture there. definite, you're host relatives could think of it is disrespectful yet they might understand. besides, there are a number of different possibilities. there is chicken, tacos..... each and every little thing extremely. And OMG! the Grilled crimson meat there is staggering. There are cooked fish too like "kabayaki-don (una-don)" it is extremely good. i presumed it became scrumptious and that i'm American. lol
