I think a little bit of both...there will be some sympathy there, but also oppents of him will jump on this stating his negleting his homely duties. I would like to think the public has half a brain enough to figure out that he wouldn't run without his wife's approval.

Firstly we need to keep in mind that he may be reconsidering his campaign to begin with as having family issues like this will make it hard for him to focus on what he would need to when running for office. Of course he will have the sympathy card on his side but the question of will he be able to perform at his best I would have to answer, no. He is human like all of us and that comes with a liability that most of us have with some exceptions. We have emotions and feelings. He is dealing with a major emotional distraction right now.
However, if you were to take any other candidate and put them into a similar circumstance they wouldn't be able to focus either. So from a logical standpoint, the situation could only help him by drawing the public's sympathy. Even those who wouldn't have voted for him may just do so because they feel sorry for him.
Therefore I would have to say the more likely of your options to occur is option number one.

People will generally be sympathetic to to the Edwards. I certainly am. However, I think that when it gets down to the wire, people will be reluctant to vote for a candidate who has a spouse with a major medical problem.
Outwardly people will admire their courage - hers in discussing her illness and his in standing by her while continuing his campaign. However, people know that the next President will have enough issues to handle without that added pressure of a spouse with bone cancer. No,it doesn't take away from his abilities, but it can potentially divert his attention if and when she gets sicker. Voters are looking for vibrance, not weakness.
I still remember watching Bob Dole fall off the podium clutching that pen in his gnarled hand and knowing that it was all over at that point...

You must remember that Mr Edwards is a personal injury trial lawyer. He made his millions (and used tax loopholes to not pay $500K+ in medicare taxes) off of sympathy votes from jurors. Sure, he'll play it either directly or indirectly.
I feel for his wife and wish her the best. But, I also wish the Country the best, and Mr Edwards is not it.

That really sucks what happened to Mrs Edwards. But John Edwards doesn't have a chance maybe someone should tell him so he can give his wife the love she deserves.

Jesus people, his campaign was in the toilet before it started, this gave it a boost, (momentary).
Mind you I wish her well, I've lost good friends to breast cancer in a similar fashion and it is by far one of the worst ways to watch a person die.
The power and greed of this ambulance chaser sociopath is what is telling. "The campaign goes on".. That shows he craves power more than any concern for his wife and children.

As a breast cancer survivor, there is not alot he can do for her but be supportive and he can do that on the road. I think option 1 is going to happen. He is going to get the sympathy vote....he got mine and all the other woman I know.

I guess it depends on how debilitating her cancer treatment is.
I don't know that he'd get a ton of votes on sympathy alone, but this cancer scare did put him back on the front pages. The only other thing that's done that lately is Ann Coulter.

I believe it will be right in the middle. People will be sympathetic on his situation but wont necessarily vote for him but if he shows that he cares his wife and takes care of her through her cancer, then the people might lean on voting for him coz it shows that he is compassionate and cares for others
