Temporary Instruction Permits

A Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) allows you to practice driving with a licensed adult for up to 180 days. A TIP is issued if you are age 18 or older and:

Have never been licensed.
Hold an expired out-of-country driver license.
Hold a Michigan or out-of-state driver license expired for more than four years.

Before obtaining a TIP, you must provide your Social Security number, and pass vision and written knowledge tests. In certain cases, a road sign test may also be required. After practicing your driving with a licensed adult for at least 30 days, you are eligible to apply for a Michigan driver license. A road skills test must be taken before you can apply for a driver license.

Good luck

I live in MI, too. You didn't have a "permit" as MI got rid of those about 10 years ago... you must mean that you had your Level 1 Driver's License... meaning you can only drive with a licensed adult over 21 (I think it's 21).

Since you're 18 now, you can go down and apply for your full license. You'll need to take the driving test but because you're over 18, you won't need to do the whole graduated license thing. You need to go to the Secretary of State, or call them, and they'll give you the correct info.

You have to go and take another test for your driving permit. You should take the driving test to get your drivers license. It's better to have a license than a permit.
