I think the newer generation of metal and studio session drummers are the most technical in history. Although maybe not as melodic as some drummers, their technical ability is amazing. Some are also melodic in their own way. My favorites of these are:
1. Mike Portnoy - Dream Theatre
2. Virgil Donati - Session Drummer, Clinician
3. Thomas Lang - Session Drummer, Clinician
4. Jason Bittner - Shadows Fall
5. Chris Adler - Lamb of God
6. Travis Smith - Trivium
7. Brann Dailor - Mastadon

There's also other greats in different styles and most are extremely versatile in many styles:
Vinnie Colaiuta
Steve Gadd
Neil Peart
Phil Collins
John Bonham
Peter Erskine
Dave Weckl
Buddy Rich
Joe Morello

My list could also go on and on......and I'm sure I've left out a few absolutely great drummers.

here's a famous john lennon quote.
interviewer- "is ringo the greatest drummer in the world?"
john - "he's not even the greatest drummer in the beatles"

you'd be surprised to find out how much of the drumming on beatles records was done by paul. ringo = not that good

here are the greatest

1. keith moon - the who - he could play a 4 minute song without ever playing a straight beat, and he never lost it

2. john bonzo bonham- led zeppelin - hardest hitting drummer ever. he was a machine, a robot almost

3. ginger baker - cream- hard hitter too. never flashy, but never misses a beat, just solid

4. mickey hart and bill kreutzman - grateful dead - yea, it's 2 guys but they kept the band going. every concert the 2 would do a 10 -15 minute long drum solo called rhythm devils. they would do it all. amazing

5. can't think of another person that can be on the list with these guys.

btw, i've met chad smith a bunch. he's from my hometown of mt clemens michigan. very nice guy.

It amazes me that of 44 people who answered this question not a single one mentioned Carl Palmer, one of the all time best.

My list for greatest rock drummers of all time:

1. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
2. Neil Peart (Rush)
3. Carl Palmer (ELP)
4. Keith Moon (The Who)
5. Ginger Baker (Cream)

And the greatest drum solo I ever saw was John (the banger) Bonham playing Moby Dick in 1973!

Rock on!
