DVD writer / rewriter drives come in several types... there are those that can write -R disks, those that can write +R disks and those that can write both +R and -R disks. If yours is a -R (re)writer then you won;t be able to burn +R disks.

Of yours is meant to burn +R and -R (it will say on the front what sort it can burn... probably... in the plastic moulding) then maybe it's faulty.

Most DVD players will only play DVD-R & the most common DVD's used are DVD-R so your OK, there is little use for DVD+R.
Your computer should be able to use DVD-RW but I would not recomend using them unless you have to.
