They don't have to be the most technically skilled, just the best.

For me:

1: Mr legend himself, Dimebag of Pantera (Rest In Piece)
2: Kirk Hammet of Metallica (of course)
3: John Frusciante of RHCP
4: Eric Clapton (Old slow hand himself)
5: Michael "Padge" Paget of BFMV (Tied with Matt Tuck though!)

Only 5? Not easy to answer. I'd have to say, in no particular order of preference: Kirk Hammett, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, Jimi Hendrix.

And a few more, just for good measure: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Gary Moore, they were all pretty good too.

My number 1 for all-time technical excellence is Joe Satriani.

I actually studies some of this during my music degree days. For me:

1. Brian May - Queen
2. George Harrison - Beatles
3. Jimmy Hendrix
4. Flea - I knwo he's a bass player but OMG he's good!
5. John Frusciante - RHCP

But so many others - Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend - the list goes on!

Then in no real order...Dave Gilmour,Neil Young, George Harrison, Ace Frehley, Eric Clapton, BB King, Keith Richards, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, Jack White. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dave Navarro, Richie Blackmore, Toni Iommi, Randy Rhoads, Zak Wylde, Slash...I could go on even longer.

Not forgetting, Bungle on the elastic band shoebox guitar!
