Recieved a violation notice for this question. Very poor show. I wonder who the toss pot was that reported it. I personaly thought the question posed, gave rise to topical debate and opinion. I suppose thats no longer allowed in this forum, which is quickly being ruined by a few assholes.

The best answer was going to the guy that said "you must be eating the cow or something" cause he had me in stitches.

you probably got a violation because as it is written it is not a question but a statement and as such does not require a "?"
It should start, do you agree? or who agrees?
after saying that it was probably just some di*khead who didn't like our wonderful Maggie!

What? I typed out a long answer to this stupid question yesterday and had a record number of thumbs up from those who recognise what a complete disaster the woman was. From memory my list included:

Took us into the ERM for party political purposes - with disasterous economic consequences later.

Allowed interest rates to go up to 18%

Political mismanagement which led to the Falklands Invasion (the Callaghan Government did the right things in the 1970s when Argentina looked like threatening the islands. Result = no invasion, no bloodshed, lost general election!!)

Two recessions. Built up massive national debt.

Anti-democratic. Banned union membership for GCHQ workers, bent the rules on housing and school opt out ballots to get the result she wanted (abstensions counted as Yes votes).

Destroyed our coal mining industry - our energy costs would be lower today if we produced gas from coal rather than importing it from Russia.

Supported the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Supported the fascist dictator General Pinochet.

Supported terrorists in Afghanistan (the people our troops are now fighting). One terrorist leader attended a Tory party conference fringe meeting in the 1980s shortly after his group had blown up Kabul railway station killing dozens of innocent civilians.

In 1979 made an election promise not to put up VAT, and a few weeks after being elected she doubled it.

Politicised the civil service.

Broke a 30 year old political convention just so she could get an hereditary peerage when she went.

Sold off Council houses, but wouldn't let Councils reinvest the proceeds in new house building - causing the housing problem we have today.

Objectively, respecting foreign opinion and avoiding political value judgments, Thatcher would rank alongside Churchill in terms of the effect of her politics on the society and future of the UK. One could make a case for the significance of Lloyd George (World War One, Irish independence, Liberal reforms etc). I have heard Atlee championed but the direction of the post-war reforms had been agreed by the coalition National government. The politics of MacMillan and Wilson were largely shaped by greater international trends.

But who was "best"? Sadly any debate will dissolve into opposing political ideologies.

Not the best, but the best since Churchill in WWII. Unfortunately we've had our main parties hijacked by the spineless pro-EU supporting freaks who love to give away our freedoms for a dacha on the French Riviera or the Cote D'Azur. But can't vote UKIP as I don't know what else they support: unbridled union power? CND? Nationalisation?
Until I know I'll just have to hope some real party appears that supports real sentences for real criminals, not spot-fines for 34MPH in a 30 zone, or for putting the wrong rubbish in the wrong sack or for protecting yourself against thugs. COME BACK MAGGIE!! EVEN IF YOU HAVE PARKINSON'S YOU'VE MORE GUMPTION THAN THE LOSERS WHO FOLLOWED, COULDN'T SUCCEED, YOU!!
PS. since the Blair-faced Liar's banning of guns, murder by shootings has spiralled. Why? Because "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms, disarm only those inclined to obey the law." -- from "Unintended Consequences", by John Ross.

I'm not a fan of the conservatives but have to admit she did some good things. Getting the Unions under control for one. But saying that she was a bit "un-hinged" by the end of her run as prime-minister, I think she should have gone sooner than she did, but the best? ....HMMMM ....no.

The woman was a disaster. Many of our current ills are directly attributable for her obsession with right wing philosophers and economists who said you need to appeal to people's self interest if you want successful policies. They also had this idea that human behaviour and needs could be measured, and deeply distrusted altruists because they were not governed by these rules. No wonder she hated Band Aid and Bob Geldorf.
Blair has also swallowed this wholesale, being a Thatcher fan. As a result we have an education system obsessed with league tables and teaching kids to pass tests; we have a health service more interested in producing the correct statistics, not the best treatment , and a police force adept at rebranding crimes to massage figures. As for the public/private finance - we will pay very heavily for this in the future.
She abused her power to benefit her son. Under the 30 year rule documents were released a year ago showing how much money flowed in Mark Thatcher's direction from public funds - mostly for his personal 'security' - to companies with whom he had connections. Remember the stories in the press about links between Mark, and arms companies awarded government contracts? Frankly to me it sounded like misuse of public funds and she should be made to take responsability for it.

And how many of you remember the legislation (Young Person's and Social Security Act, I think it was called) passed by her saying that single unemployed people had to move on every six weeks if they had not got a job? If they refused to comply their benefit was cut. This was because of an article in the Sun about unemployed under 26's living the life (apparently )in B&B's on the coast. As a result many churches allowed the homeless unemployed to camp in their grounds, and opened the churches too in some areas, to the fury of the Conservatives who then attacked the Church, tried to bully them via the media to stop them, and tried to interfere in the appointment of bishops in the Church of England. The tents that appeared in church grounds were too visible a symbol of injustice.
This was the law of the land for 6 months before public disgust and the actions of the Church got it withdrawn. I have always had greater respect for the Church since for putting their beliefs in action.

For me, she was the woman who tried to make greed respectable, and humanitarianism a quirky if not despicable weakness of character.
