in global warming gases dont hold the suns heat it only has special property of allowing incoming small wavelengh to pass through and stops outgoing heat waves of longer wavelenth thus heating earth atmosphere holding can be caused by electromegnitic phenomenae of solar winds its guess. for trapping answer is sure green house effect.
