If you have to do this without a calculator and showing your working out, this would be the best way.
1) First turn this fraction into an "improper" fraction (that means a bigger number on the top than on the bottom)
so if you have 3 and 7/8, you know that 3 is 3 lots of 8/8 (because 8/8=1)
So that means you have 3 = (3*8) / 8 = 24/8
You already had a 7/8 so just add 7/8 + 24/8 = 31/8
so then you need to do long division if you're not allowed to use a calc. If you are allowed to use a calculator, just do 31 divided by 8 = 3.875
