Phi is the golden ratio. It is the solution of : x - 1 = 1/x

x = (1 + sqrt(5)) / 2 = 1.61803398874989484

The golden ratio.

(1 + SQRT(5) )/2 = 1.6180339887498948...

What is interesting (in addition to what others have said) is that the fraction part does not change when you do these operations:

inverse (1/x) = 0.6180339887498948....

square (x^2) = 2.6180339887498948...

---

This gives us a few methods to derive the number:
Using the inverse:

1/x = x - 1 (as indicated by Bill T)
x = 1 + 1/x

Using the square:
x^2 = x + 1
x = SQRT(x+1)

If you are referring to Phi, or the golden ratio, you are talking about one of the most interesting numbers known. It is found in nature in different animals and plants, for example, the spiral of a nautilus sea shell is defined by the golden ratio. Also the way leaves are arranged around plant stems, how the sections of a pineapple are situated, how a falcon dives to catch its prey, all of these are related to the ratio 1.618...

Many poeple attribute mystical properties to the number, they also have "found" the ratio in things built by the ancients that really, on closer inspection were not built according to this number.

For a really interesting read, find the book "The Golden Ratio" by Mario Livio.
