Some were inspired by nature (like Frank Lloyd Wright), some were inspired by ancient architecture (architects of the Renaissance), some were inspired by technological advances (most modernists), some were inspired by the vernacular architecture of their region. So there are many influences, and some architects were influenced by several different things at once, or over the course of their careers.

Interesting question - for which the answer could be very long!! Well Gaudi built some fantastic pieces in and around Barcelona - so that's somewhere to start for inspiration!
Also things like social and political change would also be a factor which would inspire/ affect the end result. As well as new ideas in the arts, such as cubism, surrealism ect.
Hope that helps!
