I'd have to go for no smoking. I used to "smoke for Britain" (100+ a day and sometimes three on at the same time without realising it - how bad can it get!) but although I stopped dead a few years ago before that same event happened to me, I DO appreciate the fact that some people just CANNOT get out of the habit, so without confining them to their front rooms, there must surely be some "discrete" places where people would be allowed to smoke - but it would be like going to a porn show and that way they'd give up smoking out of sheer embarrassment - oh what a rotten b'stard I am ! ! !

Already occurred in the U.S. and I sort of agree with it. I can see a law for it in public places since there is no choice involved with second hand smoke. I do not however agree with government forcing PRIVATE business on what legal activities can or cannot occur in their place. Okay health issues blah blah I get it. But I get an allergic reaction from cheap perfumes, it effects my health so should the government ban all cheap perfume wearers from the pubs?

I am a non smoker and I like eating out and often go to the pub and I don't think there should be a total ban.I think people should have freedom to make their own choice and the pubs and restaurants should also be allowed to choose whether to be smoking or non smoking. If more people stop smoking where do you think the government will get the taxes that will be lost?

well i 've just stopped smoking 2 weeks ago for my own satisfaction no one Else's. If people want to smoke its up to them as long as they are an adult has far as I'm concerned. and if its going to be band then why don't they band it from been sold in the first place it would be much easier. if its a ban for public places then it must mean every where because outside is public also. So where do we draw the line?

As a non-smoker and one who led the charge while in high school to teach kids not to smoke.
NOPE
We all know the risks now and if you don't you deserve the Darwin award.
The studies on second hand smoke have been questionable to begin with and when Al Gore blame global warming on smokers sealed it for me.
I am in favor of smoking and non-smoking section.
In a bar a place where taking in drinks that destory the liver and people are seeking out unprotected sex.... smoking doesn't rate as problem.
When states got sue big tobacco for millions what did they do with that money help the poor smokers.. NOPE they funded their own little pork projects.
Smoking should be for adults just like drinking.
What my fear is they ban smoking what is next my beer.
This is my line in the sand.

I wholeheartedly agree.
It has worked great here in Scotland for the past year and has been a benefit to almost everyone. Pubs (especially those which serve food) and restaurants have done better business than ever since the ban was imposed. It has even been quite cool for smokers, since a kind of dating sub-culture has grown up among those who stand outside buildings for a smoke..

As A smoker (with no intentions of quiting just yet, thank you) I think that a total ban is not the only solution. Do as it has been done in several bars in Canada where there is a smoking section that is totally blocked from the rest of the bar by Plexiglas partitions. Those inside the room may smoke and eat and drink freely while the rest (presumably non-smokers) can mingle in the other parts of the bar/establishment. The enclosed space has its own air exchange system that filters out the smoke and brings in outside air to recirculate. This will cost a bit to incorporate into each bar, but will satisfy both the smoker and the non-smoker. Hospitals, shopping malls, airports (and similar public places) are a good idea to have non-smoking, but some places must be left available for those of us that wish to smoke. It is another form of discrimination to target just a specific type of person and tell them they cant do something, is it not?

Confined public spaces - yes
Pubs - provide a smoking room
Private clubs - no
The public ought to think very carefully about what the Government of the day will demonise and ban next.
Propaganda - publicity intended to spread ideas or
information that will persuade or convincce...
(OED 1983)
Educate instead so adults can make informed choice.

Ilive in scotland, and the smoking ban has been great, no more smelly clothes and hair. I presume you live in England so you will find that the only thing that will change is the smell, and the amount of people standing outside the pubs and clubs having a smoke.

I agree smoking (hate that word) should be banned cause c'mon if your in a public place and there is no smoking that brings no harm for you but if there is smoking still your just causing health hazards to yourself and to other people and think for one second if your a father or mother or around kids you can really give them health hazards and making kids and babies inhale that will make them die and we will have less a population plus you know well smokers need a break from smoking any way because smoking aint good it causes Heart disiese, wrinkles, cancer, and many more hazards and to that girl that said it aint our buissness well Non-Smokers know that smoking can take away thier lives unlike some people. Also They didnt say no more smoking EVERYWHERE you can still smoke at the place you stay at you can smoke in your car but ya'll smokers need to get educated on how smoking will prevent you from living life and to mothers and fathers do you really want your child to be taken away from you? that they have to go to foster care and say that there parents died of cancer and stroke or something If you have a child a niece and nephew or whatever you should think about what will they sayu when you die? will they exaggerate? Will child go looking for you only to find you dead? do you want your children to smoke and take away thier lives like you did? Smokers you need to think about the people around you, the people you love, and of course you cause not only are you hurting yourself you hurting people you dont know people love people you gave birth to! and the rest
