I have them in both, but mostly sun. Even the ones on the side of my garage get sun in the morning. I planted 75 last year, and they all came up! Be sure to plant at least 6 inches deep. I live in Michigan and this keeps the bulbs from freezing. You can also plant annuals over the top of them after they die off, but remember not to cut the leaves off to soon. They should be turning yellow. The leaves will take what they need from the sun for quite a while after they bloom in order to feed the bulb for next year. I wish you could have seen mine last year. I went with contrasting colors. Deep purples (almost black) and light pinks. I saw the color combination at a Casino up in Mt.Pleasant, MI. I'm moving next month and I think I'll miss my tulips the most!

I'm not an expert but I plant my tulips in the sun. I live in Minnesota and get a kick out of how hardy Tulips are so I give them every chance I can to let them come up early. I plant them on the south side of my, close to the foundation, that way the spring sun warms up the bricks which in turn warms up the soil and my tulips almost jump out of the ground! In fact, on St Patrick's Day I saw the first little shoots poking out of the ground! Spring is just around the corner! Hoo Ray! :-)

The tulips should be in the sun because then it would be better for them but you have to put a lot of water!
