They are worlds apart.
NVQ is like many other goverment led quals (key skills etc.., over promoted and of little value, compared to the old school quals it replaced.
There is no way that an NVQ which is practical qualification can compare to an academic qual in the first place. Secondly the depth to which each subject is covered is light years apart. To attain an NVQ all you have to do is provide a audit trail of admin and you will get one. They are mickey mouse qualification, create to massage education training, a new version of YTS schemes etc..
Sorry i know you may have worked for it, but compared to a degree in same topic they are simply not the same. Colleges etc. will opposite but they get money off the government for running them !!!
NVQ5 = PHD, now you must have an NVQ in comedy for that ?

You can get a merit or distinction in an NVQ. So I guess a distinction would be a first, a merit a second, and just a plain pass NVQ would either be a third or just a pass.
The equivalency exists because of the European Union, and we have to accept degrees and vocational things from other countries. Because countries differ in what counts as a degree and what counts as vocational (and which subjects you do in each type as well), there needs to be some way of comparing.
So the equality thing, that's for government jobs that require that level of proficiency. They're not allowed to discriminate against the other country's qualifications, at least in theory.
There are EU rules made to make freedom of movement between countries easier, and hence we had to decide things.
Any NVQ is better than a degree from Luton or Royal Halloway any day.

The truth of the matter is that you are comparing different things. Whereas academic qualifications require more intense study over a short time, NVQs relate to practical training and experience over a longer period at a slower rate. NVQ 4 is said to be around 1st degree level from those in the know.
You have to realise this fact too, and it is a fact. When it comes to professional vocational qualifications, you often have many years study and training to do after a degree. I qualified as an accountant, and a degree or HND will only get you a small part of the way. They provide exemptions up to a point, but you have a great deal more exams to study for and pass after. In addition to that you need to gain years of on job training and practical experience in order to finally qualify.

Hi actually nvq4 is equivalent to the 1st year of a degree. Its a higher national dipolma. A full degree is 3 years on average so to get a full degree you would need nvq 5 and 6 also. Nvq 7 is like a masters

The simple answer is no, How can a qualification which i have completed in 6 months be equal to that of a degree, however it is of a degree level and will count as credits for a degree under prior learning.
i will also say that standards will differ as with a degree, however disagreeing with a previous answer there is no grading system for a NVQ, pass, merits and distictions are all parts of the GNVQ - which is college based. A level 3 GNVQ at Merit grade will compare to 2 or 3 C's at Alevel, depending if you undertake additional units or not.
However the NVQ itself is not a worthless qualification. i have a NVQ4 in Care and RMA. i will soon be undertaking my A1 award and will be an assessor. Once i have this Award i can assess others in care up to level 4, and in management to level 4 due to my RMA, on top of this if i retrade and considered to be competant in my new field i can also assess that field as well, i.e hairdresser, retail, plumbing, Travel, catering, health and safety, ect ect ect. So in this county it is very well sought after espicially the higher you get. i guess it is a shame that it is not recognised abroad.

NVQ 4 IS equal to an oridinary degree - 1st or a 2nd doesn't matter.
NVQ 1 = GCSEs D - G
NVQ 2 = GCSEs A* - C
NVQ 3 = A Levels
NVQ 4 = HNC/HND/Degree
NVQ 5 = PHD
I have been told this by 5 Lecturers at 2 DIFFERENT Colleges

1st - In most states, first-degree murder is defined as an unlawful killing that is both willful and premeditated, meaning that it was committed after planning or "lying in wait" for the victim. For example, Dan comes home to find his wife in bed with Victor. Three days later, Dan waits behind a tree near Victor's front door. When Victor comes out of the house, Dan shoots and kills him. 2nd- Second-degree murder is ordinarily defined as 1) an intentional killing that is not premeditated or planned, nor committed in a reasonable "heat of passion" or 2) a killing caused by dangerous conduct and the offender's obvious lack of concern for human life. Second-degree murder may best be viewed as the middle ground between first-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter. For example, Dan comes home to find his wife in bed with Victor. At a stoplight the next day, Dan sees Victor riding in the passenger seat of a nearby car. Dan pulls out a gun and fires three shots into the car, missing Victor but killing the driver of the car. 3rd- a killing that resulted from a depraved heart or extreme recklessness; and (4th degree) murder committed by an Accomplice during the commission of, attempt of, or flight from certain felonies.

well... wikipedia says:
Their approximate academic equivalents are:
NVQ 1 = foundation GNVQ/three to four GCSEs at grades D-E
NVQ 2 = four to five GCSEs at grades A-C
NVQ 3 = two A levels
NVQ 4 = HNC/HND
NVQ 5 = postgraduate qualification
so HNC/HND it is, i guess!
