These sites are recommended because they provide user comments that inform you about the quality of files.
The BEST torrent program out now is "uTorrent", with "Azureus" following VERY closely behind. uTorrent is extremely light on system resources that's why, in some cases, it's preferred over Azureus which utilizes java, and therefore, hogs your system somewhat.
They both are very good however, just a matter of choice really.

mininova.com is a good site.I think BitTorrent is beter than Azureus. Got warnings from friends to not use Azureus.

As far as sites, I always use Mininova.org. Others are Bitsoup, Meganova, Piratebay, TorrentReactor, TorrentPortal, Bitenova, Monova...lots of 'em. As far as software (or 'clients"), I would recommend BitComet.

I use Utorrent...it works well. But they are do the same thing.
