I usually ignore it and act as if they didn't. That usually annoys them because they want the person they are patronising to notice and feel low because of it. It's some stupid effort to fix their own broken self-esteem by breaking others down. Depending on how often they patronise me or others, I might grab a chance I have to patronise them back to give them a taste of their own medicine. They usually stop for a while after that.

First don't let it upset you or they "win". Second, while in private let them know you don't appreciate they way they speak to you or their overall attitude. Be cool when doing this. If it doesn't stop then the next time you are with this person in public and they start their crap, give it right back to them. I go for the shock factor and it makes everyone uncomfortable. Depending how informal the situation, I'd flat out say (in front of everyone), "I thought we talked about the way you patronize people, why do you have to be such an asshole?". It should throw them off balance. Hopefully they either apologize or sincerely get their act together for fear of your public condemnation.

I hate that, myself,,,I ask, what do you REALLY feel? This politely reminds them that you do not buy the smooze, and that you really do care to hear the truth.. Perhaps they willrealize, how fake the smooze is, and give others a break, from the crap, as well.

A simple F.U. Directly while staring them in the eye usually has the desired effect.

next time they patronize you, stop and think about what they are trying to do, and calmly explain that you appreciat their consideration, but find it uncomfortable. if that doesn't work, show some emotion next time, but don't be insulting to them. if that doesnt work, like someone else said, you may have to curse them out.

a very good question, how do you deal with the annoying person, you can try ignoring them, you can sink to their level and be annoying yourself or you can think to yourself, why are they doing this to me and realize their not their doing it to themselves.
