I have bought a few laptops off ebay over the last year. The best advice I can give you is to buy from someone that sells them for a living, rather than from someone just selling their own. I always look for the ones that have several thousand positive feedbacks and it has served me well.
The last one i bought was a brand new Dell, still in its original box with the seal intact, delivered in less than 24 hours, with a warranty. Just don't rush into buying.
Good Luck!

I would suggest that you buy a copy pf Micro Mart computer magazine , it will only cost you a couple of quid. You will find a number of companies in there selling reconditioned and new laptops. Many of them are factory reconditioned and as new condition, the most important thing is they come with a warranty. Some have a full twelve months. At least you have the peace of mind of knowing you can contact the seller if you do have a problem. The mag is a good read too if you want to learn a bit more about what makes your computer tick. ope this helps.

I have bought several from eBay.
Tips:
read the sellers feedback from other buyers
read the item description very carefully
read / ask about the return policy
ask the seller questions about the item if needed
pay by PayPal or other secure payment plan that doesn't share personal information
remember if it is too good to be true it probably is.
research the make and model of notebook that you are looking at, go to the manufactures web site, look for specifics about it, and the availability of updated downloads.
most sold on eBay have fair to poor batteries, don't forget to figure in the cost of a new one, you can find them on eBay also
if you are careful and research your item, set the most that you will pay, don't get carried away in the biding. ask questions of the seller.

I would never buy anything like alaptop off ebay or anything expensive unless I could see it first, try it, and collect it when I won the item.
You be better buying a cheap one new but have a look at www.ebuyer.co.uk
They got some very good deals at the minute and you know with them you are going to get a decent item and you will get it next day.

As laptops are coming down in price, I'd go for a new one. It depends on what you want it for, but if you want an all round compact model that will handle games, I've just purchased a Samsung R20 LWM for £550 and it is very good.
