When I was younger I was really shy. At the age of 20, I traveled half a continent away to meet my biological father for the first time. I realized that no one (him included) knew ME... they had no idea how I acted/reacted in daily life to any given situation. So... I decided to be who I wanted to be. I told myself that what I showed the world was up to me. Face it: no matter what it is that holds us 'back', we all have things that we are good at. Most people who are shy or have low self-esteem have people telling them that every single day. So... I approached the world with a 'Fake it til ya make it' attitude. And it worked!

I also did a lot of writing, and started listening to people when they had positive things to say. The negative bits I tried not to dwell on... tried not to make them the focus of all that I do. I was lucky... I was surrounded by good people... that really helped. Don't let anyone get you down... those folks have their own issues... don't let them make themselves better by being cruel to you.

I hope this helped in some way. Best Wishes!

Age has a lot to do with it. You grow and you realize all the stuff you worried about, isn't really important. All of the people whose opinions I fretted over, were just as concerned about what others thought of them too. Now when I get self conscious, I just remind myself that I'm human and if I was perfect, I wouldn't be on this planet.

You only have to watch people who seem like they have a high self esteem, and are faking it. I can't remember what I had to overcome, but I remember knowing that I am a complete person no matter what and nobody is a better human being than I am. I love Desiderata. Go to this page to learn more:

Uhh just put myself out there I guess. Not be afraid to show people what I can do, and that I'm just as good - if not better - than they are. Being more open helped me to relate to people.
