Water expands as it freezes.
Hence water in cracks will expand as it freezes and push things even futher apart. This is why we insulate pipes in winter, as the freezing water can cause pipes to burst.

Water is a very unusual compound in that rather than contracting when cooled like most other chemicals, it actually expands when cooled to below 3.98 degrees Celsius.
When water enters and fills a crack in the concrete, it takes up all the space in it. But when it freezes, it expands, taking up more space than before. Thus, it pushes the concrete outwards, giving the impression that the concrete is being heaved about.

The water has a peculiar feature, when it freezes it expands. So when it fills a cavity (crack) in concrete (or anything else) and freezes it expands and the crack gets bigger. Thats why you don't put liquid in glass bottles in freezer, it will brake.

Water fills in concrete will definately disintegrate the properties of concrete due to environment ,temperature,chemical reaction,and physical reaction and weaken the other material.
In short,u can not stop water to leak and water has its own chemical physical property will distrub the other material chemical property when combine together.

Because the water swells when frozen and this will cause expansion of the concrete and the substrate it is laid on ... which will cause cracking and heaving

the simple way to say it is the molucles expand in water when frozen so it cracks stuff thats what satatues never last that long
