Usually when someone says this, they are referring to a person..ususlly a girl/woman that really takes alot of pride in their appearance(nothing wrong with this unless someone goes to the extreme). The high-maintenance usually refers to spending lots of time and money on clothing, make-up, hair styles, etc. basically just about anything you would do to make sure that you look your best. Like some people would include tanning, gym memberships, manicures, pedicures, facial treatments, etc. The list could go on and on. I think one can mean this as a compliment or an insult...just depends on who is saying it and who they are saying it about! I've been accused of being high-maintenance before because I always try to look my best...but I don't spend a fortune on anything(couldn't if I wanted to), but some people think that people that are attractive and wear nice clothing and accessories naturally spend lots of time and money...sometimes true, sometimes not. Hope this helps you!

Usually refers to a single woman who expects that a lot of money should be spent on her - the kind of gal who will go out every other week on a shopping spree where she buys hundreds of dollars worth of clothes for herself that she'll wear once, or maybe twice before going out and doing it again. She wants her own car, but a minivan won't cut it; she wants a Miata or a 'vette or a Beemer. She won't go out for supper at McDonald's' it's gotta be a four-star restaurant with a maitre-d and a wine steward. Forget line dancing down at the Legion hall; she's gotta go to the trendiest - and most expensive - joint in town - and dressed to kill!
She's also known as a gold-digger in yesterday's parlance.

I have high maintenance explained to me as a girl on a dating
spree with her man, shopping in a Mall, choosing expensive
items, and having him pay for them. $$$

This info came from a man I asked. I though it was all the fake stuff women do, and wear. But that was the response I
received from him.

High-Maintenance means a woman who basically is not natural in her appearance. Dies her hair, tans, fake nails etc. Basically it costs alot $$$$ to keep up with her appearance and style.
