I don't think that religion, or lack of religion ought to play a part in selecting a president, even though it does. What is needed is a good executive, that surrounds himself with good advisers of all walks of life. I think that leaving religion out of politics would be an important step forward for America. .

Atheists are just as bad as the most fundamentalist religious zealot. Religious zealots have absolutely no doubt that what their religion says is absolutely factually accurate and any other position is blasphemy.

Atheists are just as absolutely convinced that there is no creator or higher being or anything of the sort. Even though there is no way to prove this either way the atheist is already unquestionably convinced. It is just another form of unreasoned zealotry.

A far more rational approach would be religious people who have there own beliefs but admit there is no proof scientific or otherwise. Even Agnostics who are not sure if there is a creator are more rational than someone who accepts the unprovable as fact.

No matter what anyone tries to sell you, no one knows for sure (yet) exactly how the universe came to be. We barely even know how little we really know.

In this respect, atheists are flawed and unacceptable as a president, in my opinion.

Me personally? I am a deist. It is my belief not a verifyible fact.

Unfortunately for you most of America does not think God is fictional, and we all get to vote. Being an atheist should not matter one way or another as for the ability to run the country.

It's impossible for an atheist to get elected to Congress, much less president. There are probably some closet atheists who have to pretend to be worshippers of the "Sky Daddy" to get votes. However, I don't think America is ready for an openly non-religious pres. or congressman.

So you want your beliefs, or lack of beliefs, to trump theirs. Why are you any different?

That being said, those traits that people would want in a President... integrity, intelligence, wisdom, etc... are not limited to Christians (or religious people in general). If a candidate that I thought was solid on the issues, had a good track record, and announced that he/she was an atheist, that person would not lose my vote just on that basis.

Yes and no...i myself am an atheist...though also the most conservative person i know. An atheist wouldnt bring religion into politics; further separating church and state. However, I myself being an atheist...find that me and others like me tend to have moral values that are...well, not as strong as those of christians simply because of our lack of faith.

Thomas Jefferson was called an atheist by his political opponents and he made a great President.

Ideally, theism and atheism should not be relevant to the job! Vision and Commitment to the nation and the people, Admin ability and astute management of international affairs, and Compassion at that level, are the hallmarks of that great job!

Well I think America has had about enough of what Bush calls Christian. Somewhere along the line I believe George Bush got the wrong message.
