1. Have a purpose in life.
2. Have goals that are not easily within reach but that can be achieved with perseverance, tenacity, hard work and motivation.
3. Think positive.
4. Have a religion. Scientific studies show that people with religion are happier. One can learn morality from religion.
5. Forgive people.
6. Look to the present and the future. Do not look at past failures.
7. Have hope that your future is bright.
8. Love, laugh, smile, dance, relax, sing.
9. Learn the memory techniques of studying. Read many motivational books, biographies.
10. Socialise and have a wide network of friends. Have a few close friends for you to confide in and to spur each other on.
11. Be kind, helpful, thoughtful, analytical, sensitive, cheerful, gentle, faithful, loyal, peaceable, happy, good, have self-control.
12. Learn as much as possible. Be inquisitive and curious.
13. Maximise your time.
14. Be patient.

I guess that depends on how you define success. But you need to be optimistic, set realistic goals (make short term, long term, and longer term goals), don't be all work and no play because life can be shorter than anticipated, do unto others and all that, remain loyal to your morals and don't let them be undermined by others, do what is right no matter how time consuming, costly, or personally annoying, vote, give to a charity and then volunteer time for the selfsame charity, visit a nursing home, study what you love-remember you will be doing it for 40+ hours a week for 40+ years.

Work hard, study hard so that you are well informed about the career that you are going into, be honest, be kind, be wise, be discerning, and learn how to communicate well with people. You can have all of the above qualities, minus the ability to communicate well with others and it will affect your career in a negative way. I have found that being a well rounded person, with the ability to get along well with others is vital to your career.

1. Hug trees
2. Don't use more than your fair share of food, electricity and fuel.
3. Be nice to everyone, even those who are not nice to you.
4. Don't spend more than you make.
5. Do some kind of a worthwhile job, not some kind of job where all you really are is a parasite on society.
