Yes: despite the corruption, which is a global thing, not peculiar to India, the country seems to be developing well, especially in the last 10 to 12 years, as seen from the fillip and new vigour of wealth and activity, in many parts of the country as one travels! Yes, it's only a matter of time, just a few years more: India will be a develped country!

Do we mean corruption is non existent in "developed" countries of today?

Corruption is a social issue and has less an economic or governance problem. Nevertheless corruption does impare development and governance when prevalent at very high proportions.

Going by the 2006 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index, india is way down at the 70th position much below UK(11) and USA(20), Germany(16), France(18), Honkong (15)&SIngapore(5).

Further, eventhough china has long been and moderately continues to be a communist country, it shrugs sholders with India on corruption at the 70th position.

All said and done, corruption needs to be delt with by Indians at large and driven out of not governance but society.

Did I hear you properly? Developed? What are you talking? We are actually a well developed country ruied by our politicians, politicians and the politicians. New way of life without any ethics and values. If at all , we want to go back to our original developed position, we need a mahapralaya and start again. It's too late even to think of getting in line of development.
Every citizen in our country should start following the rules and regulations. Children learn from parents. But if parents do not follow the rules and regulations, where are we going? We should live as living examples.

India will become a developed country and corruption will go hand in hand, part of the corruption will help develop it. Sounds cynical I know but that's what Consumerism, Commercialism and Capitalism does to everything and everywhere but we are made to feel better by calling it Democracy.

Only certain sectors or segments of the population of India will ever develop. Regardless of the level of corruption in the Indian government they have proven time and time again that they are incapable of handling even the most basic issues that cause problems in there society. Such problems are women's rights, environmental issues, standardized education, health concerns, especially where aids is concerned, and my personal favorite, the caste system. Despite the claims by Indian nationals who deny it exists, it still does and is still rampant.

Who says India cannot be developed?? Corruption is just one obstacle in the path of success. If the country is corrupt, it means we are corrupt! Why does a policeman ask for bribes? It is because he has realised that people will bribe him if he asks! For development, all we have to do is change ourselves slightly! Just stop bribing people around you and watch India outgrow USA!!!!!

Development and corruption go together.

Lesser the loopholes in the system, lesser will be the corruption. But it can never be eliminated altogether.

If an act of corruption doesn't come to light, then it is OK.
Thats what happens when country grows and corruption is not seen.
