It is apparently American in origin as others have said. It does make sense to think in terms of the environment, to a point.
But it needs to be doing a little something every day. Leave it to American thinking to highlight it one day of the year....
Now when hallmark will come out with a complete line of Earth Day cards and prezzies is th next question!

Its a day where people start to save the earth you clean up your local park dont use your car walk where you want to go use grocher bags again use less water.When you go to the store tell the man who works there to give you a big bag.If you want chips get the big kind.Put all the trash in one single big bag not sepertly.Buy drinks big not small.I disagree with this holidayn EARTH DAY SHOULD BE EVERYDAY NOT ONCE A YEAR try to save earth if we keep this up by the time our kids kids kids will not have a place called earth HELP THE ENVIROMENT

earthday.org has all kinds of environment friendly ideas and groups. I remember the very first earth day when I was in school, a new holiday. I wore a sundress that day in honor of the relationship between the earth and it's sun.
And for that cheeky lad, there already are some earth day cards from Hallmark...my favorite is the one where all of the planets are singing "Happy Earth day to you" to the earth. :)

Earth Day is the day when God said behold I give you baby seals. Please take this club and enjoy clubbing them. I'd like some baby seal fur boots in size 13 1/2.

I thought it was when you think of ways to conserve certain elements like gas- instead of driving your car, ride a bike to work.
