Phobia means a fear of and so homophobia must mean a fear of homosexuals... what is there to be afraid of?

not just fear. I think phobias are irrational fears. Not liking homo's is perfectly rational.

But I think in this sense they mean a string dislike or aversion.

In general terms homophobics afraid that interacting with homosexuals will make them one as well.

A phobia (fear) doesn't always have to be a rational fear and it ussualy isn't.

Why are people afraid of spiders, or pennies, or anything else? As for why homophobes are described as being afraid of gays...well, that's because they are.

Homophobic men are AFRAID that if a gay man sucessfully seduces them that they'll actually (gasp) enjoy the experience - which would make them question their own *manhood* and *heterosexuality*.

Homophobic women hate gay men because they are AFRAID that one of us gay boys will *steal* their boyfriends and husbands away from them if we evil homosexuals get them drunk and give them a suck and a rub job.

Homophobic is a symptom of a buried desire that one has that they are afraid of because of what others might think of them. Basically, they have homosexual desires. :)
