Sounds like an old Zinc plated water tank. When replaced or made redundant because of combi boilers, plumbers leave them in the loft, because of the problem you've indicated. The only way out is to cut it up but unless it's rusted, could be a tough job.

Since you have already decided you don't want the tank in your attic I would cut it up and take it out that way. To cut a hole in your roof would seem very extreme and not worth the repair costs. Unless you are putting a new roof on anyway, then that might be the easiest approach to your problem. I would use a good reciprocating saw with a good blade on it for the cutting job. You may have to drill a hole in the tank so you can start to make cuts with the saw.

This is what you should do. Remove your entire roof--it's best to do this when it's raining because it makes it easier to take the tiles off--then hire one of those lifting cranes ( I think they only cost £250 an hour) then lift out the tank into a small wheelbarrow. Once that's done you can then easily transport the tank to the next nearest waste dump.

Trash it, at least you can get some fun out of it, and you don't have to fix a hole in the roof afterwards!

you mean these silly people did not take their header tank with them. that was very generous of them do you not have water in your new house or what, maybe they had the same problem after fixing a combi, as that will not need a header tank. you sure you know what you are doing.

Ive had the same problem , its from an old boiler. In honesty i emptied ours and left it up there i think if you make a whole in your roof your just gonna create work for yourself, if your that desperate for the space then smash it up

if its an old tank you dont need i suggest getting a lend of a professional grade electric jigsaw. look for names like dewalt and makita. a budget jigsaw will burn out. this is if its a galvanized old style steel tank. just hack it into easy to carry bits with the jigsaw and carry it out the door. there will be lots of burr so be sure to wear quality work gloves.

I think you should have had an inspection on the house before you purhcased it. The inspection would have told you what it was and if you could remove it. I suggest you have someone who inspects home take a look before you do anything else.

Get a plumber to check if you don't need it. If it's cop[per take it to the scrap yard, you will get £35 for it.
