I'm having a difficult time with my lovely baby girl. She is 5 months old and has a cold and chesty cough for which she's taking doctor prescribed medicine. She is in the second day of her medication. I'm trying to feed her her normal formula milk which she is used to and likes but now she just does not want to drink. I've tried various solids today but she just does not want to eat. With formula and solids, she becomes hysterical if i try to force her. She is now drinking a third of her normal intake. Even if she did not feed whilst awake, she almost always fed in her sleep finishing her quota but she is even off this. Its like she has forgotten to latch onto the nipple. Is this normal? Are these symptoms linked to her cold? Even when she had the worst part of her cold, she fed in her sleep albeit slowly. She is happy and hydrated.

As long as she isn't dehydrated she should be ok...she is probably having a hard time as her nose is probably clogged up...go to the pharmacy and see if you can get some saline nose drops and a nasal aspirator...the drops are basically just water...so perfectly safe...and let me warn you she wont like it but it will help...drop a couple of drops into one nostril...lay her back for a few seconds...count to say 20 or 30 and then with the nasal aspirator gently suck the mucus from her nose...repeat with the other nostril...and because its not an actual medicine then its safe to use as often as you need to...try also taking her into the bathroom while you take a hot shower..the steam will help clear her chest aswell...and there is a product here called baby Vick's...safe to use on babies...rub some on the soles of her feet...odd sounding i know but it works...
hopefully when she can breath properly again she will feed properly again...what ever you do...dont force the feeding issue...it will only upset her and you.

My pediatrician said not to give them milk when their chest is all congested because it creates more mucus. As long as she is drinking liquids of any kind thats good. See if you can get her to drink some pedialyte if she starts to act dehydrated. She may love it or hate it - some kids like it and others wont touch it.

Feed her Pedialyte so she won't get dehydrated. In the meantime, call your doctor to get suggestions. The milk may be making her congestion worst. When we are congested we don't drink dairy products because the mucus gets thicker.

Try giving her Pedialite. It will provide nutrition until she begins to eat again. She probably has fever or her stomach hurts from coughing. If that doesn't work--contact you Pediatrician and ask him/her if the medication might be curbing her appetite..
