This is more easily understandable if one considers the actual scale of the components of an atom. If one takes into account the fact that the neutrons, protons and electrons of an atom actually have huge spaces between them it becomes clear that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are made up of 99+ percent empty space.
This alone does not seem too important till you add the idea that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are more of a loose conglomeration that share a similar attraction but never really touch each other.
At first glance this does not really seem relevant, but closer analysis reveals that this adds a tremendous amount of empty space to solid objects that are already made up of atoms that are 99 percent space. When so-called solid objects are seen in this light it becomes apparent that they can in no way be the seemingly solid objects they appear to be.
We ourselves are not exceptions to this phenomenon.
These seemingly solid objects are more like ghostly images that we interpret as solid objects based on our perceptual conclusions.
From this we must conclude that Perception is some sort of a trick that helps us to take these ghostly images and turn them into a world we can associate and interact with. This clever device seems to be a creation of our intellect that enables us to interact with each other in what appears to be a three dimensional reality.
I hope that helps to answered your question.
Love and blessings Don

that sort of program, can it just shut us off and turn us on, if it wants to? Definitely not.
Our free-will decides what action we must take on.
Our mind is set to thinking what it wants to, moreover, it reasons out when it is in doubt
Our emotions decide whether we are a happy soul or not
Our appetites and desires satisfy the pleasure of gratifying the bodily needs
In so far saying, the bodily functions and anatomy, let each and every organs of the body coordinate and collaborate together to keep our physical body going as dictated by the central nervous system.

Why should I prove that we are not, when we are?
There is a part of our existence that lives in another plane (not talking about alternate worlds here.) We just don't see it, but our minds (speaking about our consciousness, and not the physical brain) are connected to it just as a computer's operating system is booted in the BIOS.

The amount of code required to produce such a program would be almost infinite. Who would go to such lengths, and for what purpose?

I cannot belive you asked that! Can computers have spirituality, faith?!! You want proof? If your own person is not a proof, then no one can prove to you, you are not a robot ! Haven't you ever been in love? If a robot can feel that then I give up!!

No.
Can you prove to me we aren't just floating brains in vats?
Can you prove to me that you aren't just a figment of my imagination?
Can you prove to me that you exist at all, and that the text that apparently came from your fingertips wasn't just a random splash of background noise?
Can you prove anything?
Ever?
*Laughs*
Does it really matter?
Life and reality are just what your senses tell you they are. They can be no more.

My birth certification mentioned the date of my birth, my weight and my parents names. There was no notation from the doctor that I was a simulation. If you find out otherwise, please let me know.

It is impossible to know anything. You can assume you are what you believe yourself to be based on your perceptions....but no one really knows anything, ever.
