there are several methods, yet they all come down to 2 simple idea so far.

1. parachute landings. Like mercury, gemini, and apollo for the american space program which landed in the ocean, or the Soyuz programs from the Russians which landed on solid land..
2. Glider landings, like the space shuttle, and the Russian Space plane. And even the new space tourist craft land that way. These vehicles come through the atmosphere, and then glide to a pre selected runway.

(from above, not because normal airports are too busy, but because their runways are too short.)

There are other designs out there including on really interesting one that lands on rockets. But the two types listed above are the main methods.

Spaceships Coming To Earth

The only object that can land after going into outer space is the Space Shuttle in the USA and a similar Shuttle in Russia.

All other crafts make a parachute assisted fall in the ocean or land.

The spaceships that you are referring to ( guess) is only Fiction.

Only the US and Russia have manned spacecraft. The US space shuttle is the only one that is reusable. It does not use it's engines when landing so it lands like a glider. The Russian space capsules are more like the US Apollo, Mercury and Gemini space craft. They are are one-time use and fall to a certain altitude before deploying parachutes. They land on the open plains in central Russia as opposed to the old US space scraft that splashed down in the Atlantic.

Most American space shuttles land like an airplane. They usually land at places like an air force base, because normal airports are too busy. They decend like a regular plane, and then use a parachute to slow doen, because they cannot slow down as fast as a normal airplane. However, the landing gear is very similar, and the method is basically the same. You might want to try googling this question.

there's also a rarer, more unconventional type of landing. a sample returns to Earth, and a parachute deploys. instead of landing however, a plane with a special type of net or hook will fly slightly over the craft and will snag it
