If you look at the purpose of a licence (it is a different matter that you can buy them here), it is a certificate that ensures that you have gone through proper orientation processes in terms of skills and knowledge of road rules and safety. These are widely different in different regions of the world. So there can't be a common licence. But the process is faster (easier) if you have got your Indian Driving Licence the right way ;-)

No not with your Indian driving licence. You have to get an "International Driving Licence " from RTO with a proof of your Visa and payment of a fee of Rs. 500.00
However ensure that the car you intend to drive in US has open insurance, since most of the insurance companies provide specific insurance only in the name of the owner, unlilke in India where any person holding valid licence can drive car.
You may have to obtain an insurance to drive in US, which is quit expensive for non US drivers.

u will need to apply for an international driving license before u leave from India, that u can procure from any Automobile Association in India. this is valid for a year. after u go to the US u will need to apply for their license but for a year u can drive on your Indian license.

i drove in nc for 3 years with an ohio license. but when i got ion my first license check they asked if i lived here and how long i was in the state. nc state law is that oince you establish residency in the state you hace 30 days to get your license changed. so if you don't want to change your license keep an address in indiana and don't get caught
