I have Windows 98 and I just got a laptop with Windows XP. It doesn't have internet, and can't have it right now. Is there a way I can transfer files from the desktop to the laptop without the internet?

There are many different ways to transfer files from one computer to another with or without the internet.

Going from cheapest to most expensive:
1. Convince a geek friend to do it for free, if you don't have one make one, they can be a load of help (me saying this as a geek friend to a lot of people)
2. Burn a cd if your desktop has a burner
3. Buy a thumb drive, you can get a 1 gb on for a good deal if you watch the newspaper ads
4. Buy a crossover cable and setup direct network connection
5. Buy a wireless router (this will assist you when you get high speed internet to use the laptop) and get a network cable for the desktop computer and network the two together
6. Buy an external hard drive, you can use it to keep perminet data backups and switch easily between the two computers
7. Go to a place like best buy, take a beating with the heavy prices, and they will do one of the other above options for you at an absorbent price!

I hope those help, good luck!

u can do it the easy way or the hard way - if u get a thumbdrive - install driver for win98Se - easy way but u need thumbdrive. u could transfer using cdrom but i supposed u have already considered that by this time.

if u r think of moving not just data but also programs - it won't work. But if u want to plug in a cable and move things over - u can try using a cross-over network cable (cost a couple of dollars only and assuming that your Win98 system has a network card, u notebook should have) then connect both system using the network cable - setup networking. good to learn this also. configure both system to have the same network workgroup, restart both. plug cable - go to accessories>communication>direct nework connection - and u can connect them. one as host and the other as dun remember wat already. for the xp - u need to setup neworking using the network option atthe control panel - dun sound easy but like i said - this is the hard way. but fun to play with it. u can read up all about various ways to do networking at

good luck

I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but I was pricing both wired and wireless usb adapters using only froogle and rated resellers. Both wired and wireless can be had for less than $20 + shipping. As was mentioned before, a flash drive will move files quickly enough.
