The American version won't work over here.

You'd be better off buying a Japanese version as they are compatible with both NTSC and PAL games/DVDs etc. They have the emoticon chip too.

You cant play any UK ps2 games on a US PS3

No and NO lol -different power cable and different games need for the US version
