A ridiculous amount of money. He claimed that he could spend 3 million a day for 100 years even if he did not earn another penny.

Not that much actually. According to the site I found (see below) he only makes about $900,000 per year, with a third of that being bonuses. Nor did he receive any stocks for compensation.
Gates' money is wrapped up mostly in Microsoft stocks, where Gates holds many stocks (that's how you judge people's net worth these days).

A lot of his wealth is tied up in Microsoft stock, as someone else pointed out. $900,000 is below average for a top executive, especially one as sucessful as Gates. Execs who bankrupt companies often get salaries in the millions.
