When I was at school, (too long ago now to admit to) we leaned our times tables by rote. I know that's considered very old fashioned now, but I have remembered every one, and it's been useful all my life. Children coming out of the system these days, can't do anything without a calculator. Also, I can't remember any of my classmates, who couldn't read. Why are children falling through the net these days?

Hi Babe, I'm with you on this one. I too was at secondary school in the 80s and the system back then was far better. These days it's all tests tests and more tests. It's like digging up flowers to see if they are growing. It's pointless.

Teaching is still good, in some cases the behaviour is much worse. Kids have realised that teachers do not have any power and many parents back there children up when they misbehave

depends on the society
children today are used to differentstyle of teaching and in some ways teaching sounds an easier job as there was less negotiating and explaining in the fifties
