Vinyl is still the best format. You simply get a better sonic experience. I would recommend a person do a side by side comparison if you could.
But the two best ways to experience music in a soulful way is to see it live, and make it yourself!
I grew up listening to bands like the Beatles. I listened intently (that is with intent) wearing headphones, and really got to know nuances, lyrics, arrangements etc. So of course now I listen to cd's mp3's etc. on headphones, and can hear and feel it.
The only 'soul' a music has is the soul the artist puts there. And I believe there are many soulful artists making music, probably more than there ever was.
But the music industry forces other, more commercially viable 'artists' on us.
I like roots based stuff, blues, folk, blues based rock. I think there are people who got 'it' - but you got to look for them for the most part!

I think that most soulful music was produced from the 50s until the late 80s....then it has died off in a big way unfortunately.
