My 17yr daughter has severe cramping with periods recently, missing the last 3 days of school .(has missed a total of 23 days this school year including today) I have given her Midol and heating pad but don't seem to work . won't last the whole day at school, so instead of sending her to school; I keep her home, can't leave work quickly, and the only thing school does is just have them call their parents to take them home anyways.
was wondering what else can be done for severe cramping? she can't get up out of bed, just to go to bathroom. they are too severe. and the pressure of carrying books all day on her stomach would make it worse. or is she faking?
when I was a teen and even now my periods are severe also. but my mother never believed me and I had to just "suffer" through them all the time.
the school says take her to the doctors, but then she would miss another day of school and I miss a day of work and what could a doctor do for cramps since pills and heating pad won't

The dr could help both of you to find out whether or not you have endometriosis.

Check to see if there is a gyn (this is who I would recommend seeing after talking to her pediatrician if your insurance requires going to a primary care physician first) close by to her school so that she doesn't have to miss a lot of school during the day if there is one that close.

To find out more about endometriosis check out: http://www.endocenter.org

As for medications they can give her something a bit stronger than Ibuprofen like a medicine called Ponstel which is an anti-inflammatory but one of the things it is designed to help is period pain. I was first introduced to it myself 10 years ago and I absolutely love the stuff.

If you are wondering if endometriosis can run in families, yes it can.

Feel free to e-mail or IM me privately any time if you have questions.

Well,
as her mom you probably don't want to hear this but... you may want to read the 4th paragraph in this article

http://www.teenwire.com/infocus/2004/if-20041109p332-masturbation.php

when I was younger I had problems with cramps AND endo and as weird as it sounds that really helped me. I don't know how on earth you would go about recommending something like that to your daughter though. Maybe just leave some literature on her desk or point her to a website or something?? good luck.

Please take sokokl's advice. I also had those severe pain and tried everything and nothing helped until I went to see a gynae. She is not faking and take her seriously as you don't want her to feel misserable and skip school everytime/monthly.
